MICEX Index begins year with new historical record

Today at the opening of the trade at the Moscow exchange  the MICEX index set a new historical record, surpassing 2260 points.

This is due to the growth of the value of shares of a number of Russian companies (including the Moscow stock exchange itself, the shares of which rose by more than 3%), recorded for the first time in this year's stock trading.

At the peak value of the ‘ruble’, the MICEX index, which is considered one of the two main indexes of the Moscow Stock Exchange, reached 2260.17 points on Tuesday, which is 1.23% above the closing level of the previous trading session. The MICEX index rose for the first time in history above the 2260 points' mark .

The value of the ‘dollar’  RTS index reached the level of 1165.32 points on January 3, which is 1.13% higher than at the close of trade on December 30 2016 and is the highest rate since December 14 2016, RBC reports.

The main drivers of growth of the index along with the most shares of the Moscow Stock Exchange were the shares of the companies such as Rusal (+ 4,08%), Rossetti (+ 3.16%), Alrosa (+ 2.94%) and Aeroflot (+ 2.29%). At 11:33 (MSK) the value of the MICEX index reached the level of 2256.19 points, the RTS index - 1162.92 points.

Recall that the calculation of the MICEX Index started on September 22 1997 with 100 points. The historic minimum of its value was recorded on October 5 1998 (18.53 points). The index is calculated on the basis of 50 shares of the Russian companies representing the main sectors of the economy.
