Pollution levels in trans-border rivers of Azerbaijan tested
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaIn early January the environmental monitoring department of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan conducted regular monitoring in order to identify the pollution levels of the
trans-border Kur and Araz rivers, as well as their cross-border tributaries, Trend cites the press service of the Ministry.
Water flow in the Kur in the first month of 2011 decreased by one cubic meter per second compared to the last month of 2010, amounting to 126 cubic meters per second. According to the results of the
monitoring, because of the fact that household waste and polluted water of industrial enterprises on the territories of Georgia and Armenia is dumped directly into water sources without treatment, the
volume of biogenic substances in the Kur River is several times higher than normal.
According to the results of the monitoring, water flow in the Araz River was 81 cubic meters per second. The oxygen levels at all the monitoring stations was between 5.64-6.51 mg per liter of water, meeting sanitary standards.
