At the end of the press conference held in Berlin, during which German Chancellor Angela Merkel touched in detail on the current situation around the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, it became clear that Berlin continues to hold a very balanced position on the issue. Despite the attempts by Armenian journalists, who read pre-prepared questions from sheets, to provoke the head of the German government to express anti-Azerbaijani statements, as well as the efforts by the Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan to blame Azerbaijan for the recent aggravation on the front, the German leadership did not move away from its traditional foreign policy on the issue of the settlement by a fraction.

These theses, which are painfully perceived by the Armenian side, permeate all the statements of Merkel . Thus, Merkel did not mentioned the so-called NKR, stressing that there are two sides of the conflict – Armenia and Azerbaijan. However, it is fully convergent with the position repeatedly voiced in writing of the German government, which is not tired of emphasizing that the so-called ‘self-defense army’ of the separatist regime is almost completely staffed by regular troops from the Republic of Armenia and Armenian conscripts.

Moreover, the German Chancellor almost openly stated that due to the inability of Armenia to establish normal relations with its neighbors in the region, it is trapped in an extremely unfavorable position. "It is particularly important that the conflict should be settled as early as possible, since the development of Armenia, if it had had a good relationship with its neighbors, would have been much easier,’’ it is impossible to explain the diplomatic note of Merkel in other words.

This bitter pill was followed by a second one: "The military conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia is a failed prerequisite to restore contacts between Armenia and Turkey, which were observed a few years ago." This is a clear hint that while the provocations on the front and the occupation of the Azerbaijani territories, which is the root of the collisions, continue, Yerevan should not wait for the normalization of relations with its neighbors. And in these conditions Germany is not planning to promote the opening of the Armenian-Turkish border.

Noting that the meeting with Sargsyan had been planned long ago (so there is no direct link between his visit and the current events on the front), Merkel holds them regularly, and soon she will meet again with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, the Chancellor emphasized her neutral position in the conflict .

However, it is obvious that the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is becoming one of the priorities of Germany's foreign policy during the German presidency of the OSCE. And the equidistant neutral position of Germany is based primarily on the principles of international law, and in this sense it is fully consistent with the interests of Azerbaijan.
