The situation surrounding the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was discussed recently during a summit in Sochi. The Presidents of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia met in the Krasnaya Polyna ski resort and shared their opinions on the way the conflict can be settled.
Experts believe that the summit was a remarkable one. “Even if it’s not a real breakthrough, it’s definitely a step in the right direction,” Deputy Director of the Institute of the Commonwealth of Independent States Vladimir Zharikhin said.
“The Azerbaijani and Armenian elites understand that Russia is a better partner than the USA or the EU, who can hardly understand what is happening in the region,” thinks Dr. Alexey Vlasov, the Deputy Dean of the History Faculty of the Moscow State University, the editor-in-chief of the Vestnik Kavkaza news agency.
This summit was the 8th meeting of the three countries’ leaders. The first one took place in 2008 in St-Petersburg, the second in 2009 in the same city. Then presidents then met in Moscow, Kishinev, Sochi, again in St-Petersburg and in Astrakhan.
Russia is now planning to become a major mediator of the peace talks, as it is interested in peace and stability in the region. However, the process has just begun.
