Armenia: Government and opposition are approaching consensus

In Armenia, the authorities and the opposition are taking public measures to improve their relations

The Armenian government took a serious step on April 20, when a conference on reform of the judicial system was held. Armenian During the conference President Serzh Sargsyan demanded a total investigative revision of the incidents of March 1 (in which the lives of 10 opposition activists were taken).
The next day, the Special Investigative Committee decided to review all the facts discovered during the previous investigations. This is a sign of important changes in relations between the government and the opposition, who were officially blamed for the incident.

In response, Levon Zurabyan ( the coordinator of the leading Armenian National Congress opposition party) said that the president's statement is, in fact, a fulfilment of the opposition's first demand.
The fulfilment of the second demand is considered to be an authorization of an ANC meeting resolution on the 26th of April.

The fulfilment of the third and last opposition demand ( the amnesty of political prisoners) is not so clear. On the one hand, there have been no direct government statements related to the subject. On the other hand, the words of Serzh Sargsyan regarding the approaching anniversary of the country's  independence, and his order given to the minister of justice, have been interpreted by the opposition as the government's desire to resolve the problem of political prisoners. In this context, Levon Ter-Petrosyan, the leader of the ANC, is sure that the authorities will release the prisoners.
Therefore, the three main demands of the ANC have been partially or completely fulfilled. This proves that the opposition and the authorities are approaching a consensus.

However, there are several forces in the country that could probably exacerbate the improving situation, such as Armenian ex-president Robert Kocharyan, leader of the "Heritage" party Raffi Hovannisya and leaders of the other parties that are afraid of being driven away
from the Armenian political scene.
Despite these facts, an obvious improvement of the political situation in Armenia can be seen – the opposition and the authorities are on their way to an agreement.
