It’s not a secret that, even after the end of the Cold War, Western
countries are striving to reorganize the world according to their own
interests. To achieve their goals they use not only economic or
political mechanisms, but also military force. They interfere in the
internal affairs of independent states.
The main aim of this policy is banal control of natural resources. It
appears that the Western political mentality hasn’t changed since the
times of the Berlin Wall.
As Noam Chomsky said, the current world sheriff protecting the Western
rules of the game is the only global superpower, the USA.
In fact, we have a world in which no country can provide its own
independent policy. Any rebels are considered to be criminals and are
punished. Double standards are one of the main principles. Hosni
Mubarak, who had been a close supporter of the US over the course of
30 years, one day became a dictator and a tyrant.
Sensible politicians, providing a policy of national interests, have
to be worried about all these things.
In this context, let’s consider relations between Azerbaijan and the
West. We clearly state our mind on the direction of our approach with
European partners, including cooperation within the Eastern
Partnership Program and other formats. This policy is determined by
the national interests of Azerbaijan. However, the country won’t do
everything the West wants. Azerbaijan has its own strategy of
development, involving diversification of oil and gas exports, good
relations with neighbors, non-interference in the internal affairs of
other states and so on.
Western countries would like to make Azerbaijan provide an
anti-Iranian policy against its geopolitical interests, and then
dilution of administration for wider influence on the country’s policy
in key issues.
However, Azerbaijan manages to resist the West's will being imposed on
it. This leads to some foreign forces being annoyed and publishing
anti-Azerbaijani articles in major Western periodicals, which present
fake information and a direct politically-determined order.
Azerbaijan has proved many times that democratization, development of
civil society institutes and European integration are the conscious
choice of the country. Azerbaijan is a middle link between Europe and
Central Asia. Western countries should ask themselves: what do they
want really?
Does Europe need NABUCCO, AGRI, TAP and other energy projects? Does
Europe want to have a stable reliable partner directed at democracy
and European integration, which provides an independent policy across
Russia, Iran, Turkey and Central Asia? Do Western countries need
Azerbaijan's logistical potential and its air space, which is a route
to the East?
If they do need all this, there are reasons for a more sensible policy
towards their partners. The West should be patient and reconsider its
wrong political guidelines.
