Former Deputy Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly told VK correspondent about real prospects for dialogue between the country’s authorities and the opposition Armenian National Congress
What the real purpose of the dialogue between the opposition Armenian National Congress and the country’s present day political elite?
- Armenian authorities are trying to use the dialogue started with the opposition in order to justify their rule. President Sargsyan is trying to maintain his doubtful legitimacy this way. As for me, I don’t understand why these people, those who are ruling the country, can be seen as possible partners. They simply usurped the power in Armenian. The Armenian National Congress wins nothing in this talk. Neither do the Armenian people.
Can you say that it’s now a calm period in the Armenian politics?
In general, yes. The current political situation is natural for the period before coming elections. New parties emerge, old ones become more active. There’s nothing to push Armenia to preterm elections, as the Armenian National Congress’ activists say all the time.
Does it mean that no social unrest is possible?
The Armenian National Congress is not going to stand aside this process, but it should first of all adopt a new strategy. It’s naïve to believe that President Sargsyan will resign on the opposition’s conditions. That’s just unbelievable. That means that only popular uprising will overthrow him.
The Free Democrats party was established recently in Armenia. What the aim of this project? What is its future?
The Free Democrats party formed by the former members of the All-National Movement, who were excluded from the party for uncertain reasons, is believed to be a projects launched by the authorities. Still I don’t think it’s true. Unfortunately the political culture in Armenia is still undeveloped.
