Conservatives’ epoch ends in France

It seems long dominance of conservatives in power of France comes to an end. After the first round of the parliamentary elections it became clear that the left wing, which gained 47% of votes, seized the initiative in the French politics. Victory of Francois Hollande in the presidential elections was logical. The party of the current president gained 34.8% of votes in the first round, and experts predict its firm victory in the second round of voting. However, voter turnout is incredibly low at these elections.

According to preliminary forecasts, the left wing will have 275-315 seats in the parliaments out of 577 seats. Socialists won’t gain absolute majority, but Hollande should be happy, as he won’t have to work with a prime minister from the conservative wing. Francois Hollande avoided the requirement to have such an “unfavorable” cooperation.

It seems Socialists will compose a coalition with French Greens which will probably get 12-16 seats in the parliament. Hollande has already appointed two Green ministers in his new government. At the moment Socialists hope that they won’t have to take too radical Left Front into the coalition along with Greens, as their demands are unacceptable even for Socialists themselves (for example, to increase minimal salary up to 1700 euro).

However, conservatives from UMP still believe in their victory in the second round, but experts do not share their hopes. The negative role is played by the internal party competitions, which began after Sarkozy’s defeat in the presidential elections – the party hasn’t decided yet who will head the parliamentary fraction. UMP stated that they wouldn’t cooperate with National Front headed by Marin Le-Pen due to differences in values and views.

National Front gained less number of votes than it had been predicted. Nevertheless, they still have chances to appear in the parliaments. It is a success for nationalists anyway, and probably a bad sign for the European society. The complete internal political picture of France will be clear on next Sunday.
