German Chancellor Angela Merkel gave her first interview in the third term of her governance to the First Public Channel of Germany. The interview touched on priorities for the new government in internal and all-European policy. German journalists also asked her about Ukraine’s choice between the Customs Union and the European Union and the decision of German President Joachim Gauk not to visit the Sochi Olympics.
- Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that he would allocate 11 million euros to Ukraine. Can Germany afford to enter “the auction” for Ukraine to direct its foreign political vector to the West?
- I think no “auctions" can solve the problem. I have already mentioned in the governmental note on the Eastern Partnership that the situation “either-or” has established: either Ukraine is close to Europe or it is closer to Russia. The situation should be changed, but Ukraine cannot achieve it alone. Europe, including Germany, should continue negotiations with Russia. Confrontation won’t lead to anything. I think we are too involved into “the tender” for Ukraine, I want an independent Ukraine to make its own sovereign decision. A condition for it is Ukraine’s readiness to conduct reforms.
- Do you mean that European countries are involved in the "auction"?
- No. I say that there must be no "auction". However, Ukraine needs money which it tries to get by various means. There is a situation when a categorical choice between Russia and Europe becomes too sharp. It concerns both political aspects and financial moments. I believe that neighborhood cannot be like that in a long-term prospect.
- President Gauk isn't going to Sochi. Are you?
- I have not planned a trip to Sochi yet. I have been German Chancellor for 8 years, and I have never visited the Olympic Games. Nevertheless, I will consider going to Sochi. At the same time, there is no doubt that the federal government of Germany will be presented at the Olympic Games in Sochi.
