The coming visit of President Dmitry Medvedev to Baku tends to be a crucial point in the history of Azerbaijani-Russian relations. The conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh is still a menace to the security of the whole region and the role of Russia, who continues its peace-keeping policy, is today extremely significant.
Kremlin is now ready to become a negotiator. Russian President regularly visits the region, meets the leaders of both Armenia and Azerbaijan, only during the last year there were three trilateral meetings. The last step of this diplomatic strategy was a Dmity Medvedev’s recent visit to Erevan. The coming visit to Baku will probably be a one more significant point.
The visit of Russian President will show that Russia remains an impartial mediator and is going to continue its peace-keeping policy. This visit shouldn’t be considered a purely ceremonial event. On the contrary, it is expected that during the bilateral meeting in Baku a new treaty on state border will be signed and the issues of military cooperation discussed.
Among other issues the Presidents are going to discuss the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. The conflict still remains a threat for the security of the region. Armenia is not going to leave the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijan was would not recognize its independent status. The position of Moscow can probably influence on both parties.
