UNESCO conference starts in Moscow

First ever World Conference on Early Childhood Care and Education has
started in Moscow. The aim of this conference is to develop a certain
program in the sphere of early childhood healthcare, education and
other issues of the upbringing of small children.

Thousands of people from more than 100 countries of the world have
arrived in the Russian capital in order to discuss the serious
problems of today's children. The project is supported by influential
international organizations such as the International Labor
Organization, the United Nations International Children's Emergency
Fund (UNICEF), the World Bank and many others.

In her address, Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director-General, urged
participants that "this Conference must give a fresh impetus to early
childhood care and education worldwide. Every country that is
committed to inclusion, growth and social justice should have strong
national early childhood care and education policies in place. They
are the bedrock of a prosperous future."

Also present at the opening of the World Conference were Mehriban
Aliyeva, First Lady of Azerbaijan and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador,
Andrei Fursenko, the Russian Federation's Minister of Education, Yuri
Luzhkov, then-Mayor of Moscow, and Eleonora Mitrofanova, Chairperson
of UNESCO's Executive Board.
