Adam Tooze: “Today Russia is a very important country in the global context”

The 10th Gaidar Forum hosted the expert discussion devoted to synergy between business schools, corporate universities, and training centers at the education market for creation of a perfect model of a business school in 2039 perspective. Leading experts of the educational sphere, Russian social businessmen and Western businessmen discussed influence of growing technological innovations on the model.

“I think we shouldn’t overestimate sanctions’ influence on the Russian economy. Russian economic prospects are greatly dependant on Russia’s investment into human resources, establishment of a competitive cooperate sector, and reaching the international competitive level,” Adam Tooze, Professor of History in Columbia University, noted.

The day before the forum was opened, Professor said that decided to take part in the event because it’s necessary to improve relations between Russia and the West, considering that Russia’ national development goals are matching global trends. “I have a global view on everything. I think it’s important to discuss national development goals at the moment. For obvious reasons, Russia is a country that puts the issue on the top of the agenda. I’m a historian who study the 20th century. So I couldn’t help but come to the anniversary Gaidar Forum. As today Russia is a very important country in the global context.”

According to Tooze, historians can play a double role in discussing modern politics: “On the one hand, they should remind everybody that history repeating itself. It’s valuable but somehow risky. On the other hand, historians should say that the current situation is unique. It is a result of global processes – a demographic growth, cultural ties, development of great powers, for example, China. Russia has a weaker position in comparison with the West and America than is used to have before. However, Russia, the U.S., and Europe should discuss the way national trends and national development goals are connected with global trends. The problem should be solved everywhere in the world. I’m sure the anniversary Gaidar Forum will be one of platforms for solving the problem.”
