Combating pseudo-religious extremism demands professionalism

The Public Chamber Commission for Harmonization of Inter-ethnic and Inter-religious Relations has appealed to the General Prosecution to check 380 Internet resources for the presence of propaganda of terrorism, inter-ethnic hatred and enmity. Izvestia reports that the Public Chamber has received more than 3200 requests during a month to check websites (mostly Odnoklassniki, Vkontakte, Facebook, Twitter, Google+) which contained extremist materials, including instructions on organizing terrorist attacks and riots. Recently the Board of the Public Chamber decided to establish a special coordinating council on resistance to terrorism. The working group on combating pseudo-religious extremism was headed by Albir Krganov, the Mufti of Moscow and the Central Region, member of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation.

“In order to defeat this terrible disease, we will have a lot of work to do, but we understand that everyone has to do it professionally at his place. We do not need to substitute the security services. Public figures and representatives of religious organizations should work with the community, being engaged in prevention. Religious leaders, social structures, activists not indifferent civil society should pay maximum attention to the development of dialogue, preventive discussions, real protection of the rights and freedoms of believers within the various population groups,” Krganov thinks.

According to him, “often the recruitment is successfully solved where there is a large number of unjustly offended people and conflicts of interest... The real goal of terrorists is not only murder, but public opinion, fear and defeatism. In fact, the information campaign, as cynical as it may sound, is on two levels – a broad influence on the masses, the goal of which is uncontrolled fear and the expectation of a new tragedy, precise influence on potential terrorists, information processing of future murderers, who are ready to take terrible victims for a higher purpose. They use the most sophisticated lies and half-truths. Future crime is mixed properly with the real problems of believers.”

Krganov believes that it is necessary to work with society to defeat terrorism: “Explanatory work is conducted with young people, students, believers and non-believers on the subject of what Daesh or other criminal groups are. The myth about the radical direction of traditional faiths is being dispelled. No divine religions recognize violence or murder. The theme is very vulnerable. It does not need amateur performances. Sometimes it turns out that public activists are trying to do something, but in fact it turns out that we pour water into the hands of our enemies. And in this regard, of course, we need to summarize our efforts and become a solid steel public wall against extremism.”
