Yesterday the State Kremlin Palace celebrated the 2000th anniversary of the founding of Derbent. A historical reconstruction of the life, traditions and customs of the inhabitants of one of the oldest cities in Russia was shown as part of the musical and theatrical performance ‘The Potter's Wheel, from the Derbent Fortress to the Gates of the Kremlin’.
"This city has been famous for its tolerance for centuries. It brings together people of different classes, different cultures, religions and allows everyone to find their place in history and in human life, but the most important thing is to find happiness," the Minister for the North Caucasus Lev Kuznetsov said.

"There are the Days of Dagestan, the Days of Derbent in Moscow. The cultural programs and exhibitions that were held in Kolomenskoye, at Chistie Prudi and on the Arbat left no one indifferent. But the crown of the program was the opening of the exhibition ‘Derbent, Dagestan and Russa’ in the State History Museum. Thousands of kilometers separate Dagestan from Moscow. But millions of threads of good friendship, cooperation and understanding unite us," the head of the department of national policy, inter-regional relations and tourism of Moscow, Vladimir Chernikov, said.

"We carried out a great deal of work, but it's actually just the first step in the restoration of Derbent, which was in an extremely poor state. We are now working with the government of the Russian Federation are working on a joint program for the next two years, and in the near future we and the organizing committee are planning to discuss this program and start the implementation of this program . We will carry out restoration works for two more years.. There is both approval and support from the president. Development of the hotel industry, actually this issue is on the agenda of our program. Moreover, if previously we were engaged in improvement of streets, parks, the main task for the next two years is improvement of the waterfront of Derbent. And therefore this waterfront should have a lot of hotels, cafes and restaurants. In other words, conditions for people to rest should be created. And even in this period, after these restoration works, the number of tourists in the city of Derbent has increased exponentially. And in the long term, we believe that it may become one of Russia's major centers for tourism, for recreation, and so on. And we will work in this direction, including with investors from different countries, " the Head of Dagestan, Ramazan Abdullatipov, said
According to him, Derbent is one of the oldest cities in the Caucasus and Russia- it has played a huge role in the history of human civilization, in the development of the Russian statehood. "The celebration of the 2000th anniversary of Derbent was the civilizational message of Dagestan and Russia to the rest of the world that it is possible and necessary to live in peace and harmony. One of the deputies in the city of Derbent had such a tradition - every Friday he went to the mosque on Saturday to the synagogue, and on Sunday to the church. And we live in the respective traditions. We live in peace and harmony in Dagestan."
