Moscow hosting 'UN International Model'

These days Moscow is hosting the annual conference of the Russian Diplomatic Academy's student club 'UN International Model' (DAIMMUN 2017). It is an interactive platform for the representatives of the leading Russian and foreign universities. Delegates try themselves in the role of diplomats, apply different techniques of negotiation, demonstrate a broad outlook and erudition. The club includes five committees: the Security Council, the Human Rights Council, the High Commissioner for Refugees, the First Committee of the UN General Assembly and the Counter-Terrorism Committee.

The Secretary-General, a third-year undergraduate student Nikita Veselov said: "Over the five years of the model, the annual number of participants-delegates has increased tenfold, and its geography is expanding. During this time, our annual conference was attended by delegates from 30 countries, including the CIS member states, European and North American countries, such as Croatia, Canada, Switzerland, the African countries, the countries of the East and others. We are pleased that links between the various countries are forming thanks to this conference, because only a joint dialogue can lead to the solution of urgent problems. "

The rector of the Diplomatic Academy Yevgeny Bazhanov addressed the participants: "I hope that the 'UN Mode' will help you in moving on this very difficult way, a long way. It will be a small step, but still a step. If you finish the event with a feeling of satisfaction, a feeling that you have not wasted your time, we will be very pleased at the Diplomatic Academy. Then next year we will try again to hold such an event and not to break from tradition.

One of the main topics of discussion was the situation in the Middle East. The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov told about the role of the UN in resolving conflicts in the region: "The Middle East issues are in the field of view of the United Nations from the very inception of the organization. Since the end of 1940s it was included into the agenda of the UN, especially its Security Council, other UN bodies, the General Assembly, in the work of UN specialized agencies. All the aspects related to the Middle East settlement, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the search for ways to address these multifaceted issues are constantly in the focus of attention of the entire international community. "

The conference will last until February 18.
