Payvand: "Tehran has made the right choice in favor of the strategic and economic alliance with Moscow"

The US media resource CNBC wrote about the rapprochement between Russia and the West against the background of the threat posed by Islamic State. The rapprochement between the Western governments and Russia, which began this week, seems to be gaining momentum, as both sides agreed to intensify their forces against the common enemy – Islamic State. The terrorist attacks in Paris on Friday and the collapse of the Russian passenger aircraft led to the resumption of cooperation between the countries, which have been in conflict recently.

The rapprochement came after a long period of confrontation after the events in Ukraine and the active involvement of Russia in the Syrian crisis. The status of ‘persona non grata’ is no longer relevant for Moscow, which has become a key player in the world political arena after the United States and Europe recognized the seriousness of the threat from terrorist organizations.

The signs of a thaw in relations were shown at the beginning of the week after Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Barack Obama met at the G20 summit, where the two leaders agreed to cooperate, despite their differences. In addition, French President Francois Hollande said on Tuesday that he would meet with Putin and Obama to discuss the formation of a ‘united coalition’ to fight ISIS.

Analysts said such that a turn in international relations is quite a serious geopolitical shift, which may finally lead to the leading countries of the world joining forces in the face of terrorist threats. Of course, there are still differences between Russia, the US and the EU, but it is time to discard national interests in order to effectively deal with the real danger in the face of Islamic State.

The international publication Payvand wrote about the cooperation between Iran and Russia. Despite the fact that the Iranian Republic adheres to a policy of independent development, its relationship with Russia is much stronger than with any other country in the world. For years, Tehran and Moscow have remained allies, but relations between the two countries have not always been as strong as now.

Even in the face of competition in the global energy market, the leaders of both countries understand the importance of  strategic partnership, especially given the events unfolding in the Middle East and the world. The economic potential of both Russia and Iran provides ample opportunities for market relations on mutually beneficial terms, and military cooperation is quite a powerful weapon against shortsighted US foreign policy in the Middle East.

Russian-Iranian relations are an example of partnership between two equivalent states that respect and recognize each other's interests and are willing to make concessions in order to achieve common goals. Unlike the Western countries that cannot clearly decide on Russia, the Iranian leadership has made the right choice in favor of a strategic and economic alliance with Moscow.
