University with 260-year history trains doctors of the future

This year, Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University celebrates its 260th anniversary. At various times, Nikolay Pirogov, Nikolay Sklifosovsky, Ivan Sechenov, Sergey Botkin worked here. Anton Chekhov and many others received their education here.

"Our history has started in 1758, since the establishment of the medical faculty at the Imperial University. We went through all the steps - it was a medical institute in 1930, then became the Moscow Medical Academy, and in 2010 our university received a high status - Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University. Outstanding scientists, organizers, and specialists who lead scientific schools continue these traditions in our days - Professor Leo Bokeria, who heads the cardiac surgery school, Nikolay Yakhno heads the school of neuropathologists; the therapeutic school is headed by Yury Belenkov," University rector Petr Glybochko says.

According to him, the university has done a lot for public health for 260 years, traditions are transmitted from generation to generation, but many new things have appeared: "Such areas as simulation education, distance education, a system of continuing medical education have been introduced; the Institute of electronic medical education was established, which enables our students to acquire good knowledge and practical skills."

At the end of 2015, Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University - the only medical university of the country - joined the '5-100' project to improve the competitiveness of leading Russian universities among the world's leading research and education centers. The goal of the project was to maximize the competitive position of a group of leading Russian universities in the global research and education market. "Due to the fact that we joined the '5-100' project, our university was recognized at the world level for the first time in our history. We entered all international rankings - Times Higher Education, QS, BRICS and so on ... Today we have 3.5 thousands of foreign students from 80 countries. A branch has been opened in Azerbaijan, which is very active today. The Association of Sechenov University Alumni Association has been established," Petr Glybochko says.

According to him, the university is developing a science and technology biomedical park, which will enable the creation of new drugs and biobased products, and these developments can be used in the clinical center. "The clinical center is our pride. Today, we have 3.5 thousand beds there - this is one of the largest and well-equipped clinical centers at European universities. High-tech medical operations are carried out here, which makes it possible to conduct various scientific researches and apply them in clinical practice. The Science and Technology Park for Biomedicine consists of several institutes - the Institute of Molecular Medicine, the Institute of Regenerative Medicine, the Institute of Translational Medicine, the Institute of Personalized Medicine. The Institute of Bionic Technologies and Engineering was established, which makes it possible to implement the ideas of medical scientists with the involvement of physicists and mathematicians. This is very important. We are moving in a direction where a university is life science with new directions will be formed. New doctors will be trained and educated in these institutions - doctors of the future," the rector is convinced.

Director of the Science and Technology Park for Biomedicine Denis Butnaru emphasized that there is a special department in the park - the Center for Commercialization of Technologies - which helps to ensure that research and development reach patients, final consumers. “One of the topical examples: the Institute of Molecular Medicine has developed a drug for the treatment of celiac disease. We are entering the international level, an international patent is being developed for a celiac disease drug" Butnaru said.

The 'Medicine of the Future' school was opened this year within the Park for Biomedicine. "We call it the 'elite training zone', because the best students of our university are trained here, they are selected on the basis of the highest Unified State Exam score and English language skills, which is the international language of science. The students working here are into research activities. After 5-6 years they can master additional educational programs, the so-called professions of the future - molecular nutritionist, tissue engineer, IT physician. These professions of the future unite the competences of graduates from various universities, graduating experts who knows genetic analysis and nutrition. Such a specialist is able to chose a proper diet, after assessing the genetic characteristics of the individual patient, which will treat him on a personal, genetic level."

Denis Butnaru stressed that the Park for Biomedicine works on the principle of interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity: “We are at the intersection of biological sciences, chemistry, physics, mathematics. This year the Institute of Bionic Technologies and Engineering Research was opened. All these areas are covered with the Park for Biomedicine's paradigm umbrella - a lifelong personalized health management. That is, all research activities of the Park for Biomedicine's institutions are aimed at helping the patient from the moment of planned conception and to a zone of longevity."
