Jazz queen in Georgia

Famous Brazilian jazz singer Tania Maria has visited Tbilisi for the fourth time. She said she likes Georgian audiences. So, when well-known Georgian promoter Zaza Shengelia invited her to visit Georgia again, she consented.   Zaza Shengelia himself is a bright personality. During the Soviet era he was a komsomol secretary of the department of history of Tbilisi University. However, he managed to organize concerts of rock and other "anti-Soviet" genres, which were semi-illegal even in the late Brezhnev era. After the collapse of the USSR, Shengelia managed to organize several concerts of outstanding musicians, including Ray Charles. It was at Shengelia's invitation, that Tania Maria gave her first Tbilisi concert in 1995.  The main aim of the singer's  visit to Georgia was the opening of "Bravo Records",  the first fully-fledged sound-recording studio in Georgia, meeting the highest world standards.   The public didn't react  to the stirring style of the singer right away. The Georgian audience isn't used to dancing during a concert and singing along with the musicians. However, after the third attempt, when Tania strictly exclaimed that she disliked the way the audience repeated phrases of her repertoire, the audience livened up and started dancing, gradually freeing themselves from the constraint characteristic of "salon events", with entrance tickets costing over $100. Bidding adieu, Tania Maria showed respect to the country, by performing a Georgian song together with Georgy Peikrishvili.    Georgy Kalatozishvili. Exclusively for VK
