The eighth annual Golden Apricot international film festival has ended in Yerevan. This year, the festival featured films from such distant countries as Australia and Mexico, and hosted the non-competition program "Cinema of the CIS: 20 years of Independence" with the participation of filmmakers from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, Tajikistan and Moldova. The program was opened by a film by Alexei Uchitel, "The Edge", which had been nominated for an Oscar.
The main program of the film festival was opened by the film “Certified Copy" by Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami, who won the Cannes Film Festival in 2010 and at the moment is planning to make a film in Armenia. Another highlight of the festival was the demonstration of the film “Tree of Life” by American film director Terrence Malick, which received this year’s "Golden Palm" at Cannes International Film Festival.
The French actress, filmmaker and social activist Fanny Ardant and Hungarian film director Béla Tarr were among the honored guests at the "Golden Apricot" festival.
One of the central events of the festival was the screening of films created jointly by Turkish and Armenian filmmakers as part of the so-called "Armenian-Turkish cinema platform."
This year's "Golden Apricot" received a record number of applications - 630 applications from 81 countries, 150 of which were selected.
