Caucasus Peoples’ Cultural Festival

The 4th Caucasus Peoples’ Cultural Festival has concluded in Moscow. The traditional cultural event attracts more visitors every year. The theme of the festival this year was the 140th anniversary of the so-called Savage Division, the famous Caucasian Cavalry Division notable during WWI. An exhibition of blades, national costumes and items from the North Caucasus was presented.

Ingush Leader Yunus-bek Yevkurov presented Orders of St. George Chevaliers to descendants of the Savage Division. “Almost the whole Savage Division was awarded with St. George Crosses. Over 50% received four St. George Crosses – “the full knot” was the name of the award. Every award was inherent with personal courage and risk to life. Many of our ancestors received awards, including post-mortem, the head of Ingushetia reminded.

In an interview with Vestnik Kavkaza, Yunus-bek Yevkurov said: “There is a cultural environment of Caucasus peoples, there is a cultural environment of Russia as a whole. The environment needs to correlate with the daily graft, life and culture of every nation. It is a very important topic. Today we are working on making the cultural environment absorb the culture of peoples, all nationalities living in the republic. Of course, there is a common culture – it is the cultural behaviour, cultural communication. In general, the common culture we all need to become familiar with and which we need to teach each other. Such events allow us to know each other, the culture and traditions of each other better.”

Aliy Totorkulov, the chairman of the presidium of the Congress of Caucasus Peoples, who organized the festival, was awarded an honorary certificate for his personal contribution to the development of interethnic and inter-religious relations. “The Caucasus is an outpost of traditions in an age of globalization, when everything is erased at enormous speed, many good traditions become history in just one generation. The Caucasus still holds onto its traditions,” said Totorkulov.

Visitors watched a special concert. Caucasus groups put on exciting dance and song performances.
