Georgy Marchenko to head IMF?

Georgy Marchenko to head IMF?

After the resignation of the IMF Managing Director, a game around the
crucial post started.

This is the first time for a long time that a
CIS candidate is prominent. The fact that Grigory Marchenko was
proposed for this post is a crucial event. Despite the fact that many
Russian mass-media assessed it as an Ak Orda-publicity stunt,
variations are possible.

The Strauss-Kahn case is, along with many other meanings, a result of
a difficult combination aimed at installing control over this
important international structure.

The Russian market provides a good example of the unpredictable
outcome of redistribution of power balance between the euro and the
dollar. The Kazakhstani tenge may come under the same influence in the
near future. In this situation, the personal factor means a lot.

Marchenko himself said: "The colonial period has ended. Developing
countries are playing a more and more important role in the world GDP.
In the future, over a half of GDP will come from the countries now
called developing. The question of redistribution of authority will
inevitably emerge."

Marchenko is a compromise applicant. Moreover, he is a top
professional and has good credit history, both from Moscow's and the
western point of view. Unarguably, Marchenko cannot be considered the
leading aspirant. However, the leading candidates may not be approved
by developing countries.

The fact that Grigory Marchenko has been included on the list of
candidates is a success in itself. It shows that the influence of
Azerbaijan has increased. It should also be noted that in 2007 Russia
didn't approve the appointment of Strauss-Kahn.
