Russia and Iran realize joint projects via Caspian Sea

Tehran and the Group of Six did not reach a consensus on the Iranian nuclear program on Sunday. After the meeting, the presidents of Russia and Iran, Vladimir Putin and Hassan Rouhani, had a telephone conversation and agreed that final agreements on the nuclear program needed to be made. They also discussed the prospects of realizing joint projects.

According to Vladimir Yevseyev, the director of the Center for Socio-Political Research, Russian-Iranian trade turnover amounted to $1.4-$1.6 billion in 2013. “This is insignificant for our countries. There are plans to increase trade turnover in 2015 by 10 times, to about $15 billion. This will be followed by the realization of quite large projects, some will be realized either in the Caspian Region or the Caspian Region will partly be involved. In particular, we can talk about possible realization of electricity transfer from Russia to Iran through the territory of Azerbaijan,” explained the expert.

Construction of the second energy block of the Bushehr nuclear power plant is another essential project planned for early 2015. It will need transportation of cargo through the Caspian Region. The sides have plans for realization of a project for exchange of Iranian oil for Russian products, making the ports of the Caspian Region busy. They have agreements to modernize railway networks and energy infrastructure on the territory of Iran.

In Yevseyev’s opinion, active development of Russian-Iranian economic ties would boost the economies of Russia, Iran and all countries involved, so information support is important for their progress.

Yevseyev predicts that it would be needed to withstand attempts by Western countries to badmouth any development of Russian-Iranian relations and to encourage Iran to cooperate more intensively in the Caspian Region.

“I have already had to analyze the information war started against Russia in August 2008. A similar war was initiated against Russia after the tragic events around a Boeing-777 of Malaysian Airlines on the territory of Donetsk. We can expect that efforts Russsian and Iranian authorities make for development of bilateral relations would be blocked to the max by the West,” predicts Yevseyev.

The expert supposed that unjustified accusations may be directed towards Russia and Iran to undermine their cooperation. “For example, we can say that transportation of cargo on the Caspian would ruin the ecosystem. We can say that activation of such cooperation would ruin the ecology in the Caspian and nearby regions. We can discuss the chances of any accidents in oil transportation.”
