Interpol is looking for Russian officer Major Evgeny Borisov, who used to serve in Abkhazia. Georgian officials asked international police to declare him a wanted person.
Legal action against the Russian officer was begun after one of the terrorists responsible for organizing a series of terrorist attacks in Georgia admitted that he received orders from Major Borisov. Among acts of terror supposedly organized by the Russian officer were a blast near the American Embassy in Georgia and the office of the Labor Party.
The source in the Georgian law-enforcement agencies told the VK correspondent that the Georgian side asked Interpol to declare Major Borisov a wanted person a year ago. Georgian officials are quite satisfied with the decision of the international police and underline that, for the first time, an acting officer of the Russian army is a wanted person.
Still, the Georgian authorities don’t believe that the suspect will soon be seen in a Georgian court. “Interpol itself can do nothing to find a suspect; it can only urge national law-enforcement agencies to start looking for a wanted person,” a spokesman of the ministry of internal affairs of Georgia told the VK correspondent. He also said that Georgian officials don’t know Borisov's whereabouts. “We asked the Russian side to help us find Major Borisov, but they didn’t,” the spokesman added.
