Experts:revolution in Georgia is unlikely

The situation in Georgia, where opposition has begun mass protests against Mikhail Saakashvili’s regime, is hardly revolutionary, according to Russian experts and political scientists, RIA Novosti reported on Monday.

Since May 21st protests have been taking place in Georgia. The participants demand Saakashvili’s resign. In Tbilisi and Batumi several thousands of people participate. Previously several clashes were reported between the demonstration and the police. One of the leaders of the protests, Nino Burdzhanadze, called on Sunday for a new revolution in Georgia. Irakly Okruashvili said that on May 25th he would be in Tbilisi and that would be the day when Saakashvili would be deposed.

“The opposition protests are too weak and few to speak about a revolution similar to which has happened in North Africa and the
Middle East,” head of the information and analytic centre for social and political processes on former Soviet territory, Alexei Vlasov,
says. According to him, there is a tendency seen in the US that the West is ready to support Burdzhanadze. Everything now depends on the development of relations between Saakashvili and the West.

On the other hand, the current Georgian leader is still number one in the Georgian political elite for the US. Vlasov believes that Saakashvili will convince his foreign partners that he is important.
