Even the most sceptical experts now have no doubts that the re-election of the South Ossetian president will be held on March 25. If some still doubted its necessity at the end of last year, when the High Constitutional Court of Ossetia denounced the victory of Dzhioyeva, now it is obvious that a re-election cannot be avoided. As a result, Alla Dzhioyeva becomes a more and more isolated figure as the number of her followers diminishes. And the sudden illness that seized her a day before the scheduled date of her self-proclaimed inauguration looks at least a bit suspicious. A rumor of law enforcement agents storming her office and beating her up emerged almost immediately.
However, according to the chief investigator of cases of special importance, Alan Pliyev, the atmosphere created by Dzhioyeva’s supporters, in which he had to have a conversation with her, was the real cause of her indisposition. He also pointed out that Dzhioyeva was under a great deal of pressure from her own supporters, who urged her to postpone the inauguration. This position was taken up by Dzhioyeva’s camp after Dzambolat Tadeyev himself called her twice and asked not to conduct the inauguration. Dzhioyeva herself probably understands the hopelessness of her position after the recent rally in Tskhinvali that gathered thousands of people.
Last Thursday the Public Chamber of South Ossetia organized a demonstration under the slogan “25th March election – way to prosperity and stability’. According to the organizers, four thousand people attended the event carrying Russian and South Ossetian flags and slogans like “No to civic discord!’ and ‘We won’t allow any civic face-off to happen’. If we sum up the speeches that were made during this demonstration we’ll see that the speakers presented the upcoming elections as the last chance to restore stability to the country, that is why no civic discord should be manifested there.
Last weekend the executive president, Vadim Brovtsev, told a press-conference that all the recent events had remained within the limits of the law. Nevertheless, he stressed that there are some forces in the country that wish to destabilize the situation and pointed out that the authorities intend to fight them, but also strictly within the law. He also said that what is really needed in the country today is actual work on improvement of social and economic life.
