According to Israeli media reports, during the nuclear security summit in Seoul, Israeli Intelligence Services Minister Dan Meridor managed to hold a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. Of course, the contents of the conversation weren’t made public, but according to the journalists who were present in Seoul it lasted a long time. It also seems that the parties were quite content with each other afterwards. Dan Meridor informed journalists that he had invited the Azeri President to Israel. Aliyev promised to ponder this proposition, but didn’t give any final answer to the invitation.
There is no solid source of information on this meeting, so the experts are only guessing at its true nature. According to them, Meridor asked President Aliyev to join the sanctions against Iran. It is also possible, since Meridor coordinates all the intelligence services in Israel, that the topic of the conversation was different altogether and probably touched on some issues of security of the two countries. This theory looks more solid, considering that Baku has recently succeeded in uncovering a whole network of Teheran’s agents. The most respected Israeli observers have made no extensive comments on this meeting yet, stating only that this meeting is yet another sign of growing cooperation between Israel and Azerbaijan in the economic, scientific, military and information exchange spheres.
