According to informed sources, if Israel continues wide-scale construction in residential areas of Judaea and Samaria (on the West coast), the EU might abandon its demand of establishing “two states for two nations” and might demand turning Israel into a two-national state. The sources state that a top official of the EU who visited Jerusalem last week notified that the requirement would be announced when the share of Jewish population of the West coast will surpass 20%.
“We support demand of establishing two states for two nations, considering that this decision is beneficial for Israel,” the EU representative said. “If Israel thinks in a different way, we will have to demand establishment of a two-national state, i.e. giving all civic rights to residents of the West coast with following demographic consequences.” The EU’s warning is understandable: this variant of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict settlement might cause the situation when in 15 years Jews become a minority in united Israel. The reason for the warning is also understandable: the EU believes that Israel wouldn’t take sufficient efforts for reconstruction of the dialogue with Palestine, and Netanyahu’s statement on intensification of the settlement policy, according to Europe, weakens positions of the autonomy’s leader Mahmud Abbass and makes establishing of the Palestinian state less realistic.
Considering the fact that at the moment, according to the PA, 2.6 million Palestinians live on the West coast (according to Israel, 1.5 million) and 350 thousand Jews, it is not long before fulfillment of the EU’s threat.
At the same time, some Israeli political scientists think that a two-national state even more beneficial, if it is built as a confederation.
