The former aide of American President Barack Obama, a tutor at Harvard, the chairman of the Association Against Iranian Atom, Dr. Harry Seymour, presented his views on the further development of the situation with the Iranian nuclear program.
Speaking at the Forum of Israel Global Strategy which is held in Jerusalem, Seymour stated that in 2012 Washington feared that Premier Benjamin Netanyahu would strike at Iranian nuclear facilities. According to Seymour, Netanyahu made it clear during his visits to the U.S.A. that he had serious intentions and he had reasons for that. At the same time, Seymour is sure that Israeli Premier didn’t launch an attack not due to American objections, but due to internal disputes in the government.
Giving an expert appraisal to the Geneva accords signed by representatives of Tehran and international mediators in November, Dr. Seymour noted that the accords do not deprive Iran of the possibility to create nuclear weapons; it is more an agreement on a break than on peace. According Seymour, the differences in positions of the West and Tehran are too big, and he doesn’t believe that a desired agreement will be achieved in 6 months or in the near future at all.
At the same time, Iran is very interested in the cancellation of sanctions, while President Obama is trying to avoid a military operation. It means that Obama will talk to Iran until the end of his finally term and will leave a settlement of the problem to his successor.
It is interesting that Dr. Seymour thinks it is an acceptable option. At the same time, he is sure that there should be no concessions to Iran, if it doesn’t reject the idea of creation nuclear weapon. And he thinks that the current Iranian authorities are not ready for such rejection at the moment.
