The major German periodical Spiegel published an article by Sasha Lobo, who heavily criticized Angela Merkel for ignoring the scandal over spying upon Internet users and wiretapping German citizens by American special services. The article notes that Angela Merkel didn’t mention the problem in her New Year speech to the nation.
Spiegel reports: “The silence of Merkel causes an aggressive reaction as it is an act of aggression itself. It is impudence and contempt for society. Merkel compared NSA with the Stasi during her telephone talk with Obama, and then she suddenly stated that 2013 was a wonderful year in her New Year speech. Angela Merkel tries to create an illusion that everything is alright, even though she can see it is not so. If we measure Merkel’s indignation from 1 to 10, the comparison of NSA with Stasi is 20. If Gerhard Schröder would have dared make such a comparison during his term, the CDU would have demanded his dismissal. What else should happen for the German Chancellor to begin talking with people openly? The people brought her in power. The question demands no answer, as everything has happened.”
Spiegel also points out that the USA response for Merkel’s demands to clarify the situation could be called “diplomatic f..k off”. “If the federal government of Germany sends a list of questions to NSA in July, repeats the request in late autumn, and still gets no answer in January, this is what it is,” the periodical writes.
“Europe is turning into the society controlled by NSA. Something should be done with it, at least growing indignation of voters that the traditionally friendly democratic states act in a hostile way and antidemocratically should be emphasized. 2014 should be a year when we say “no” to it,” the author concludes.
