To Geneva with hope

To Geneva with hope

By Vestnik Kavkaza

Last week, the next round of inter-Syrian talks ended with no results. Delegations of the government and the opposition failed to come to a compromise on one of the significant matters (the struggle against terrorism, a transition government, composition of national bodies and a scheme of national consent). However, the sides agreed to conduct another meeting.

Qadri Jamil, one of the heads of the Popular Front for Change and Liberation and a member of the Coalition of Forces for Peaceful Changes, stated: “The Syrian nation feels sorrow and disappointment that Geneva-2 has made no progress at the moment. However, we in the Popular Front and the Coalition stand for peaceful changes and we believe that the fact of holding Geneva-2 is a victory of the Syrian nation, as it opens new prospects.”

According to Jamil, the two sides should sit at a round table. The first side is the regime which has sent its delegation. The second side is the opposition which hasn’t sent its delegation yet: “There is no side which would communicate with the governmental delegation. The governmental delegation thinks that it communicates with those people around whom international and other forces are gathered, i.e. these forces are hostile for it, and it cannot make any serious concessions at talks with them. We can talk about serious concessions only in case of forming a round table and the opposition delegation which would represent an important part of the Syrian people.”

Jamil complimented Russia for conducting negotiations with both sides of the inter-Syrian conflict and criticized the USA for not holding a direct dialogue with the regime and a significant part of the opposition: “How can one of sponsors of the conference play a role, if it doesn’t communicate with a very important representative of the Syrian nation? A dialogue is aimed at achieving a consensus. A dialogue should lead to national consent. Those who come to Geneva to revenge, settle accounts won’t reach any decision. Tolerance and national consent spirit are needed. We try to establish a united opposition delegation. I call for the internal opposition to form its delegation as soon as possible. The delegation should participate in the third round of the talks. When the regime sees a delegation which represents a significant part of the Syrian people, it will have no choice but to compromise and develop an acceptable decision.”
