The Interior Minister of Georgia, 28-year old Alexander Chikaidze, made a sensational statement that a revolution according to the Ukranian scenario is being prepared in Georgia – the opposition calls for experienced militants from the Right Sector to destabilize the situation. According to the minister, “certain groups are trained, they actively cooperate with non-governmental organizations and prepare for mass provocation aimed at overthrow of the government. They will build dozens of tents on Rustaveli Avenue and several hundred activists will camp there. They will demand the dismissal of the government and finally start shooting, blaming the authorities for the deaths of innocent people. According to the provocateurs, the overthrow of the leadership will be a result of their activities.” However, Chikaidze promises that the law-enforcement structures won’t wait for the overthrow, but will take strict measures. “A lot of blood has flown in Georgia in recent years, and society will prevent a new destabilization,” the minister said.
He almost exactly repeated the same view as Moscow of February's events on Kiev's Maidan square. Thus, one of the most powerful members of the Georgian government indirectly agreed with Russia’s stance that the Right Sector is a group of armed provocateurs. Meanwhile, the West, including the EU where Georgia strives to, interprets the events in a different way. Moreover, the statement was made ahead of signing the association agreement with the EU.
Furthermore, the Interior Minister warned about the upcoming disaster in days when Georgia is marking the 25th anniversary of the tragedy of April 9th, 1989, which was a starting point for a series of awful events, including the civil war. The war began with provocative shooting by unknown shooterson Rustaeli Avenue.
Even regarding the power and importance of the Interior Ministry, Alexander Chikadze would hardly make such a serious accusation toward the opposition, if he had no serious reasons for this, i.e. information from special services. And for sure the government of Ivanishvili-Garibashvili ordered him to announce the information.
Supporters of Mikhail Saakashvili have already accused the Interior Minister and the government of exaggerating the situation and demonization of opponents. “We don’t plan anything like that; Minister Chikadze is probably junked up,” Zurab Japaridze, one of speakers of the opposition United National Movement, said.
