Today the UN Security Council will conduct an open session on Ukraine; the results of the Ukrainian elections and the situation in the southeast of the country will be discussed. Yesterday the Secretary General of the UN, Ban ki-Moon, expressed concern about the violence in the southeastern regions of Ukraine, where the Kiev authorities are conducting a punitive operation against the rebels. However, Washington supports Kiev’s steps “on stabilization of the situation in Eastern Ukraine and doesn’t consider them an attempt to settle the situation by force.” The representative of the State Department, Jen Psaki, stated that the USA “continues consideration of the Ukrainian authorities’ requests on supporting the Ukrainian military in the security sphere,” but the main goal of Washington is “the support of economic and political attempts” of Kiev to stabilize the situation in Ukraine. The US President has already congratulated Pyotr Poroshenko on his victory at the presidential elections in Ukraine. Obama plans to meet Poroshenko next week.
Igor Morozov, a member of the Federation Council Committee for International Affairs, thinks that now Poroshenko will begin to form a constitution as he sees it, adjusting it in favor of the president: “In the context of a parliamentary republic it will be difficult to overcome the crisis. Poroshenko has no chances of working with the Verkhovna Rada, as it is split, and he has no support in the parliament. I think in the near future he will declare the dismissal of the parliament. New elections will be announced.”
Morozov think that it is “important for Poroshenko to get rid of people who came to power due to the armed anti-constitutional overthrow and now are discrediting themselves with the orders which led to the punitive operation in the southeast of the country.”
Meanwhile, political scientist Sergei Mikheyev says that “a war is an accessible format for fulfillment of several goals. While a war is going on, the presence of neo-Nazi groups is explainable. They have nothing to do in a normal, peaceful Ukraine; while a war for the unity of Ukraine justifies bearing arms, the presence of extremist groups, shouting that Ukraine is in danger and we have a right to everything. A war is a very convenient thing to blackmail the West, getting money from it and saying: “Look! Terrorists who are supported by the Kremlin want to split Ukraine! Give us more money, aid, arms!” A war is a nice format for hiding failures in economy and blaming the Southeast, Crimea, dangerous Russia for everything. A war is a perfect situation for stealing money. So, a war makes some people rich.”
According to Mikheyev, it will be unprofitable for many people to stop military activities and to start negotiations. “Those who are fighting there believe that they are strengthening the statehood of Ukraine. In fact they are destroying it. They should negotiate. How long will Ukrainian citizens listen to fairytales that tomorrow they will be accepted into the EU? Nobody will welcome Ukraine into the EU. It is important for Mr. Poroshenko to understand this. Probably in this case Ukraine will have a chance.”
