How will the Syrian election influence the balance of forces in the region?Important example of the victory of the current authorities in the context of a civil war in the Middle EastBy Vestnik KavkazaThe presidential elections in Syria which took place on June 3rd would make the West to consider its attitude toward conflicts in the Middle East. Pyotr Stegny, Deputy Chairman of the Association of Russian Diplomats, ambassador, thinks that “the elections, the support for the current president Bashar Assad and the government which was shown by people of Syria, the results of the elections and the fact they were held will encourage those who didn’t participate in them to start an internal Syrian dialogue and to normalize the situation. This was required by the non-implemented plan which was the basis of the Geneva-1 and Geneva-2 conferences. I think this is a big positive influence of the elections on the situation in Syria.” Stegny says that Syria is an important example of the victory of the current authorities in the context of a civil war in the Middle East: “We hope that the precedent will influence future Western policy in the region. Regionally it is very important that the Syrian regime, President Assad and the ideas which are promoted by him and his supporters managed to survive in the context of the balance of forces in the region established in 2010, when the Arab spring began, and in 2011, when the Syrian conflict was started. I think this a fact which will influence the balance of forces in the region. I hope that the incompetence and absence of prospects of the plans which were discussed in various regional capitals – I mean countries of the Persian Gulf, foreign states – on military support for the opposition will be clear to everybody. I think it is a crucial moment, as a circle of ideas which we, the international community achieved last autumn – the breakthrough in chemical arms in Syria, negotiations with Iran within the 5+1 format – it was a big victory for common sense. When the regions of the whole world were on the verge of a disaster, when we counted the days before Obama’s strike on Syria… I think the idea which united us was understanding that it is necessary to unite efforts in the struggle against extremism, withe the Jihadist groups intensifying their activity in the north, near the border between Turkey and Syria. This is a complex problem. Transformation of the situation in the countries of the Arab Spring confirms that there is always a force which acts destructively and touches on the interests of not only a country or a region, but also the whole world.”
