“The key to peace on planet Earth is in the Kremlin”

“The key to peace on planet Earth is in the Kremlin”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said yesterday that the Azerbaijani and Armenian Presidents, Ilham Aliyev and Serzh Sargsyan, will meet their Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Sochi at the end of the week. Putin will have individual meetings with them and then a trilateral summit to strengthen trust and reduce risks of confrontation in Karabakh.

Commenting on prospects of the summit, LDPR leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky said: “We need to discuss all variants, all scenarios, but questions of war and foreign policy are in the hands of one man, the head of our state. We do not want war. In the seventy years after the Second World War and Afghanistan, we have had Libya, Syria, Sudan, North Korea – the whole world, all countries covered in blood.”

Evaluating conflicts in post-Soviet space, Zhirinovsky said: “What is happening in Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Ukraine and Transnistria is bad. But the key to peace on planet Earth, to order, is in the Kremlin, only in the cabinet of the head of the Russian state. It was so 100 years ago, 50 years ago and it will be that way all the time. I am sure that the president will make a wise decision to make Baku and Yerevan happy. I do not think anyone would allow the well-being of Azerbaijan to be ruined. The three [Putin, Aliyev, Sargsyan] will sit and talk.”

Speaking of obstacles to the negotiations, Zhirinovsky states: “Other forces. Foreign forces may dictate a different scenario.” Speaking of what could help achieve success at the summit, the LDPR leader noted: “Wisdom! They are all united by the Russian language. They can speak Russian well without translators. Ilham Heydarovich studied at the world’s best higher education center, at MGIMO. His father was the remarkable Heydar Aliyev. I knew him personally and he had the sympathy of every one of us. He was a great Azerbaijani. His son continues his work excellently. Ilham Aliyev prevented a bloody war. In any case, he will make sure there would be fewer casualties. We need to start negotiations fast. Moscow, the Kremlin, the head of the Russian state will be the guarantee.”

The Russian Foreign Ministry is quite optimistic, although less assertive. People here hope to accord with the political principles of a settlement. “We hope these several issues will reach a condition for the sides to form an acceptable package. Making such a political statement, developed, with description of the principles that will be followed during conflict settlement, will undeniably encourage normalization of the atmosphere,” supposes Sergey Lavrov. He admitted that “attempts to form such a package have been numerous, and each time it seemed that we were close to an important edge when we will reach an agreement but something got in the way. So I will make no forecasts. Nonetheless, today we need to be persistent and indomitable in helping Armenia and Azerbaijan find formulations that would be comfortable for both.”
