Azerbaijani mass media animated by visit of Turkey’s Erdogan, Karabakh peace process and EU-CU-Ukraine summit
The visit of new Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, problems of settling the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the EU-Ukraine-Customs Union summit held in Sochi on August 26 have become the main highlights in Azerbaijani media in the past week.
The Novosti – Azerbaijan agency says that the visit of the Turkish president will make a significant contribution to the development of relations. Both the government and the opposition have a common opinion about it. Siyavush Nowruzov, deputy secretary general of the Yeni Azerbaijan Party, a member of parliament, noted that the sides will discuss regional and other issues of mutual interests during the visit. Isa Gambar, the leader of the opposition Musavat Party, called Erdogan’s visit to Azerbaijan logical, emphasizing the importance of the visit in terms of security and stability in both countries and the region as a whole.
“Azerbaijan and Turkey are committed to keeping stable political relations in the context of existing geopolitical risks,” noted Ilgar Velizadeh, the head of the South Caucasus Club of Political Analysts.
An important peculiarity of Erdogan’s visit to Baku, according to Velizadeh, will be the dispelling of speculation and misinterpretations that have been circulating around Turkey and the position on the Armenian issue. In particular, there have been assumptions that, right after the elections, Erdogan would go for normalization of relations with Armenia, neglecting Azerbaijani interests.
Haqqin.az says that the Baku visit of the Turkish president, authorized with all the power, just as 10 years ago, is homage to an old tradition. All Turkish leaders used to start their foreign tours with Azerbaijan. Erdogan, in the most complicated moment of Azerbaijani-Turkish relations, could not break with tradition, at least on the eve of a big upcoming challenge – the new global campaign for the 100th anniversary of the Armenian issue in Turkey, and Azerbaijan needs to find a common position for priority issues.
The article notes that in recent years the region has changed. If the Turkey of Turgut Ozal and Suleyman Demirel tried to play the role of a bridge to the Western world, Erdogan's Ankara has pronounced antagonistic sentiments against the West.
The author of the article believes that rumors that the Turkish governor will recognize the genocide against the Armenians are unfounded.

The settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict is also in the focus of the media. Political scientist Mubariz Ahmadoglu told Trend that a number of influential Armenians who realize the need for the return of Nagorno-Karabakh to Azerbaijan is growing. Not so long ago the importance of Azerbaijanis and Armenians living together in Nagorno-Karabakh was marked by a popular Armenian sociologist, Aharon Adibekyan.

Azerbaijani society has been concerned about the new law on state secrets, that is under consideration by the parliament. The law might force the Azerbaijani media to curtail coverage of sensitive topics.

The summit between the EU, Ukraine and the Eurasian Union, marked by a meeting between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Petro Poroshenko, is also being actively discussed as well as Nazarbayev's statement about Kazakhstan's right to withdraw from the Union if there is a threat to its independence. Political scientist Tofig Abbasov believes that Nazarbayev's statement was a pre-emptive move towards Russia to make it realize that Kazakhstan intends to develop purely economic relations within the Customs Union.
