Moscow wants to gain support of Europeans

The U.S., Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, UAE and Saudi Arabia opened the Syrian front in the fight with Islamists last week. Washington raided the northern and eastern districts of Syria to prevent attacks by Islamic State on western targets. Yesterday, a high-ranking American functionary told Reuters that Muhsin al-Fadhli, the leader of the Khorasan Group, a unit in touch with Al Qaeda, was killed in a bombing mission in Syria.

Igor Morozov, a member of the Federation Council Committee for International Affairs, calls America’s rejection of Russian assistance wrong: “Recently, the press secretary of the White House declared that the U.S. will do without Russia in the fight against international terrorism. We were very surprised at the speech, because Russia has quite serious influence in the Middle East, and together with European partners, with our colleagues in combating international terrorism, we can have a much greater effect on processes we are not to blame for.”

It is obvious to many that the American intervention in Syria has succeeded. In Morozov’s opinion, “governments and presidents cannot be ousted by coups. That is why we have supported the state administration, state system in Syria. I was an international observer at the elections of Bashar al-Assad. I saw what a democratic atmosphere the elections were held in. I visited cities, polling stations and can say that Assad got a very serious mandate from his voters to represent their interests, on international forums as well. So, today, when the Americans are attempting new aviation raids on Syrian territory within the framework of their global domination policy, violating international law, it is a bad precedent.”

“We need to prevent that, together with our European colleagues. There is an international legislative procedure when the most dangerous evil, international terrorism, can be fought on foreign territory. We need to talk about it at the UN General Assembly now. We either represent a joint force to prevent international terrorism or we move all the methods to our territory: to Paris, Moscow, London, New York. We can fight international terrorism only together,” supposes Morozov.

He considers Europe an ally in settling the situation in Ukraine: “Success on the road to de-escalation of the conflict in the east of Ukraine was a result of joint Russian and European efforts. French MPs played a special role in the process. With great effort, together with our OSCE colleagues we ended the armed conflict and reached an agreement on a ceasefire regime. Doubtlessly, our French colleagues helped us at the negotiations, even to make them happen. I know the position of MPs of France when we met at the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in Azerbaijan. It is a very positive position. And we here can assume that French senators made a great contribution to put the armed conflict in the east of Ukraine under control by OSCE officials and the contact group of Ukrainian and Russian representatives.”

Morozov expressed hope for continuation of Russian-European cooperation: “I think we have work to do. We want to have parliamentary dialogues as often as possible, we continue condemning the decision of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe for taking our right to vote away in the complicated, critical political situation in Europe. It was a mistake by European MPs. Together we can find a drastic solution to the Ukrainian problem and think about getting the Ukrainian state out of the economic collapse it has got into as a result of an armed coup d'etat.”
