How to stop the war in Ukraine – a political scientist’s view

By Vestnik Kavkaza

Last night Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama talked on the phone about providing a peaceful settlement of the crisis in Ukraine. Russian President spoke about the proposals which were discussed in the context of preparations for the Minsk summit in the Normandy format. The meeting, which is attracting the attention of all leading world mass media will take place this afternoon. At the moment a session of the contact group is taking place in Minsk. Russia is presented by Mikhail Zurabov, the ambassador of the RF to Kiev. Representatives of the Lugansk and Donetsk Republics are participating in the talks as well. The main goal is to stop military activities which are carried out in the southeast of the country.

Sergei Mikheyev, a political scientist, thinks that the war could be stopped with the resignation of the Ukrainian President, but after that the dissolution of the country would be inevitable. “Western leaders are not concerned about a settlement of the war. If you really want to stop the war, Petro Poroshenko should be changed. In recent weeks he looks completely lost, as if he thinks every day: “Why did I get into this mess? And how can I find a way out of it?” He has to step on it to the maximum, as he realizes that when everything is destroyed, he will be left holding the body.”

Mikheyev thinks that the groups which are fighting for “the territorial integrity of Ukraine” have absolutely selfish interests in reality: “When everybody is killed in Debaltsevo, “Aydar” demands its rights in Kiev – to give money back, they are not fighting in reality. All these “Aydars”, “Azovs”, and so on shout loudly “Viva Ukraine!” but they don’t want to die for it. Recruited soldiers are dying. Those men who were mobilized by the government are dying. Blocking detachments provide occupation or a military presence in the parts of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions where no military activities are taking place.”

Referring to friends and relatives who live on these territories, Mikheyev states that troops which are devoted to Kiev “behave absolutely inappropriately: they rob shops and do nothing there.”

According to the political scientist, the Ukrainian reality differs from our common image of it: “People who present themselves as politicians are not politicians really. Poroshenko, who used to produce chocolate, suddenly became the president. The main patriot of Ukraine is Kolomoysky, who has captured factories and plants there and now sells products here. It is a show which has turned into a horrible bloody performance.”

Mikheyev thinks that “the idea of Ukrainian statehood is fake, mythological and dragged in. It is being imposed on young people at the moment, even though those who provide this don’t believe in it. For some of them it is a business situation, for others it's a political situation the essence of which is intrigues; for a third group it's an opportunity to improve their positions in the West. And people are a consumable material, unfortunately. I think the war will stop when Petro Poroshenko stops being the president.”
