Armies of the coalition of Saudi Arabia and the countries of the Persian Gulf have started an operation against the Houthis in Yemen. They bombed key positions of the Shiah militants from the movement of Ansar Allah. The Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov urged the international community to restore the negotiating process in Yemen to stabilize the situation, stating that the games in confrontations between the Sunnis and the Shiah were very dangerous. According to him, double standards are obvious in Washington’s approach toward Yemen and Ukraine: “The US, which supports the runaway President of Yemen and opposes the former President of Ukraine Victor Yanukovich, are acting according to double standards. Both situations could be settled by means of talks.” Meanwhile, the Iranian Foreign Ministry considers the bombing of Yemen as military aggression which will worsen the crisis in the country.
Thus, the situation in Yemen enabled Moscow and Tehran to take a common position on international problems again. Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the deputy Foreign Minister of Iran for the Middle East and North Africa Affairs, thinks that Russian-Iranian cooperation is constructive and exemplary: “Meetings and contacts between our two presidents mean that cooperation between Iran and Russia is developing far and wide. We have common and similar positions on the situation in the region, including the situation in Yemen,” Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said.
According to him, “Tehran and Moscow have a common plan of fighting extremism and terrorism in the region. We will continue our resolute support of Iraq and Syria in their struggle against terrorism. The region needs no new war, and all countries should do their best to return people, stability, and security to our sensitive regions of Western Asia and North Africa.”
