Jewish people have been living in South Ossetia for two thousand years. The Jewish quarter is one of the oldest and the most picturesque places in Tskhinvali. Jewish people have a synagogue and their own school. The diaspora’s relations with the native population have always been good.
The Hebrew language was widespread among the Jewish diaspora in South Ossetia. Well-educated natives studied Hebrew themselves. The first Ossetian translation of the Scripture was made from Hebrew.
The massive emigration of the Jewish population of Ossetia to Israel started in the 1970s. However, even today, a lot of Jewish people live in South Ossetia. Unfortunately, the Jewish Quarter in Tskhinvali was destroyed during the war with Georgia in the beginning of the 1990s.
