Former political prisoners advocate human rights

Several non-governmental organizations recently held a demonstration near the Rustaveli monument against human rights violations in Georgian prisons. One of the organizers of the action, the leader of the “Former political prisoners for human rights” movement, Nana Kakabadze, told the VK correspondent that their movement pays special attention to the situation in Georgian prisons.

“The situation is terrible. Prisoners are treated extremely badly. The mortality rate in prisons is very high, tuberculosis is common,” Kakabadze says, “We demand an immediate amnesty. There are 30 thousand imprisoned people in Georgia, the highest rate per head of population in the whole world.”

Soon the demonstration turned into an anti-government meeting. Ada Marshania called upon the assembled people to show their disrespect for President Mikhail Saakashvili. Several activists were arrested after they started throwing eggs at the Court, as well as Ada Marshania, and shortly thereafter sentenced to imprisonment.

Nevertheless, the activists promised they will continue to organize such demonstrations.
