Needlework is one of the most favored traditional women's craft among the people of the North Caucasus. Traditions of embroidery have been recently restored in the region, and annual competitions are being organized. A lot of Russian as well as foreign companies now sell special embroidery sets on North Caucasian Republics' markets.
Yulia Korenyuk, 70, one of the most renowned artists in this field, lives in Pyatigorsk. There exist some exclusive traditions of Russian embroidery, retained by emigrants and now re-introduced by new embroidery lovers via internet. According to Korenyak, one of the most difficult techniques is needling on black canvas. She says that she prefers traditional techniques but now there are a lot of different ways to make embroidery work even more beautiful. Korenyak's apartment is adorned by some 40 of her most colorful pieces of work.
Over the years, traditions change, but now, despite modern pace of life, more and more women are interested in embroidering. Moreover, men also often take up this hobby and sometimes even excel women in this art that requires diligence as well as talent.
