Georgia permits national’s extradition to Hague

The Netherlands was shocked by a murder that took place in peaceful Hague in the broad daylight during a jewelry store heist.

The surveillance tape shows that at mid-day two young men enter the store and ask the salesman (who was also a jeweler and the owner) to show some jewelry pieces – supposedly for a present. Then they pull out their guns. When the jeweler resists he gets shot two times and dies on the way to the hospital.

The police offered a 15,000 euro reward and one of the robbers was arrested almost right away: Ziya Borukchu was handed over by his own mother. The second assailant, Sandro Grigoliya, 18, disappeared but was found in two days in Tbilisi. It is still unknown how he managed to flee the EU. In any case after arriving to Tbilisi he decided to give himself up to the Netherlands Embassy. The diplomats called Georgian police and the criminal was arrested.

The fate of Sandro Grigoliy is a model lesson to a whole generation of Georgians who were born after the collapse of the USSR. 17 years ago his parents left the county in search for better life and moved to Holland and accepted the state’s citizenship. But they didn’t do so well there, they had severe financial problems and so he decided to rod a jewelry store. According to him, the kill was an accident; he just wanted to frighten the owner.

The most interesting thing is that de jure Georgia bears no responsibility for its former citizen and, according to the international law; Tbilisi is obliged to grant his extradition to Hague. So Grigoliya was mistaken when he hoped to find refuge in the state that his parents left in 1995, even though he identifies himself as a Georgian person and speaks Georgian freely. So his ethnic identity has no influence over his legal status.
