This week, Russia marked Submariner Day. 107 years ago, on March 19th, 1906, the classification of ships of the Navy included a new class of combat ships – submarines, a year later future legendary submariner Magomed Hajiev was born in Dagestan.

They say that when Hajiev was a boy, he escaped to Baku where his cousin served in the fleet. There Magomed stepped on board of a ship for the first time. During the February Revolution he participated in demonstrations, but soon he left Baku: father found him and returned home. However, even father couldn’t hold his son by force. In the 1930s Hajiev became a submariner and served in the Black Sea and the North Sea fleets, in the Far East. During the Second World War the division under Hajiev’s command destroyed 27 enemy ships. He died in a battle in 1942. He was awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union post-mortem.

On March 19, 2013, among others neat the Kremlin walls Cadets of the Hajiyev Sea Cadet boarding school from Kaspiysk marched. “Without a glorious history, with no memory of the feats performed by our grandfathers and fathers, without understanding their land, without a sense of our spirit, without a future to which we are looking, without remembering our history, no development of our great country and our Russian people is possible,” Alexander Yermoshkin, the permanent representative of Dagestan under President of Russia, said. “The feat made by our grandfathers and our fathers is our ideology. When a young man Hajiyev also left his village, I doubt he thought that he would be a hero, his name would be used for calling a city on the Kola Peninsula, submarine base. He just did what he had to do. In Dagestan we have Cadet School in Kaspiysk, Marine Cadet School, there are now a few more cadet colleges.

Recently, including in Dagestan, we have not paid due attention to the youth. And young people will claim our attention and passing traditions. So this month we decided to create a movement of cadets in Dagestan. We will create a number of camps for young people, where children will go, train, explore our history and military science. This is a new patriotic movement. This is the first step to pass the glorious traditions.”
