The head of the State Duma Committee on Security and Anti-Corruption, Irina Yarovaya presented the results of the Committee's work during the spring session. She touched upon topical issues such as the tightening of measures against corruption, drug trafficking, the improvement of the judicial system, the law "on monitoring the expenses of persons holding public office", which is supported by the majority of the population.

Irina Yarovaya reminded that in the area of her committee’s work there are complex issues related to security. “Our main activities are the following subjects: arms trafficking, illegal migration, anti-corruption issues, issues associated with resistance to drug trafficking and all that is connected with organized crime and issues associated with the development of forms of parliamentary monitoring,” the chairwoman of the committee said.

According to her, parliamentary monitoring today, in the version of the law which has been adopted by the State Duma and signed by the president, of course enables new powers, which are very important from the point of view of fighting corruption and from the point of view of direct representation of the interests of the citizens of the Russian Federation.

“The subject of the most serious attention in the work of the committee was developing legislation on fighting corruption. The committee’s position was taken into account. It was to prevent any abuse of the law. We have proposed a new concept, "a ban on foreign derivatives” and everything to do with trust management. In fact, the law that we have adopted is very balanced and allows you to fully implement national state policy with regard to the fact that those who come to public office fully meet the expectations and demands of society,” Irina Yarovaya said.

She also noted that the most serious attention is paid to the protection of life and the health of citizens: “The initiative which has been prepared to protect the rights of victims is actually the cornerstone in understanding how the criminal policy concerning the protection of the rights of victims will change in the coming years.”

She thinks that one of the most serious problems is drug trafficking. “We have introduced an initiative of rehabilitation of addicts. We believe that this is necessary to extend the format of a public-private partnership in these matters. We introduce a more precise definition in the current legislation, which allows deciding on replacing punishment with involuntary treatment as a sentence. We believe that this will be a major step in favor of giving a chance to people suffering from drug addiction for rehabilitation and returning to the community. But we are very aware that for those who produce drugs and distribute drugs a punishment should be inevitable,” Irina Yarovaya concluded.
