Russian support for Damascus: ideological and humanitarian

By Vestnik Kavkaza

Yesterday the Syrian authorities sent a letter to the UN Secretary General, in which they agreed to fulfil the convention on prohibition of chemical weapons ahead of joining it. It is not clear whether this will stop the U.S. from a military strike against Syria or not, but some Western and most Russian experts warn Washington against military intervention.

According to the president of the Institute of Democracy and Cooperation (Paris), Natalya Narochnitskaya, “the U.S. is opening a Pandora’s box, because the current Arab world is not the Arab world it was, for instance, 50 years ago. It is the oil giants of the Middle East, financials, a huge demographic growth. Despite all their efforts to prevent the growth of the region’s importance, to spread chaos which they think they can control, it won’t do. Instead of reasonably involving in international affairs those layers and structures of the Arab world ready to be involved in the work, they actually rely on al-Qaeda. I conclude that this absurd ideological doctrine is turning Khrushchev’s communist rhetoric into a liberal cliché.

A confessional, political, internal and regional balance has been maintained in the world due to elements of authoritarian regimes. An authoritarian regime is also a democracy in which some of the democratic rights of society have been encroached on by the executive power, but the foundations for the extension of democracy exist, they can be corrected. Today there are no foundations in Syria or Libya. To save people’s lives somehow, basic order should be established in the countries. The United States opened the Pandora’s box themselves and provided a significant impetus to militant, radical sects and dissident movements, which destabilized the whole Middle East.”

The other direction which concerns everyone who follows the situation in Syria is humanitarian – from destruction of historic monuments to starving children.

“The humanitarian situation in Syria is the worst since the Second World War,” the deputy chairwoman of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society (IOPS), Yelena Agapova, says. “6.8 million people in Syria need humanitarian support, and need it now. 4,250,000 people are internally-displaced people who have no home. 1,940 000,Syrians left the country and became refugees.”

According to the chairman of the Moscow office of the IOPS, Serhey Baydakov, “almost ¼ of Syria’s population are internally-displaced people. These are internal refugees who live in Syria in camps for refugees and lack food, medicines, medical equipment, hygienic items. Since this spring we have collected almost 70 tons of cargo. Charity is collected in churches; some people give money, others warm clothes and food. The support came from all over Russia - from Moscow to Vladivostok.”

“Our working group has visited Syria and brought a plea for aid – they lack infant food for babies who suffered from constant military activities on Syrian territory. In general it concerns formula milk. People (including from Germany, Latvia, France, Canada) call and ask how money can be transferred for the humanitarian support.”

According to Yelena Agapova, “in case of a military aggression against Syria, the whole Middle East will boil over. Many countries will be involved in the military conflict; just one missile strike is able to ruin the world. It is obvious that missile strikes will cause mass victims among the population, bloody chaos, destruction of the infrastructure of the country, as well as religious shrines, churches, monasteries, religious clans and communities which have been living in Syria for centuries. Christian civilization will stop existing in Syria, if the scenario is implemented.”
