When Russian multi-billionaire Roman Abramovitch bought popular English FC Chelsea, he announced right away that from now on the main goal of his team is to win the Champions’ League. Experts were skeptical about this announcement at first, as well as the club’s new owner’s first steps when he started buying all available star players. They said that ‘money can’t play football’ and that Abramovich’s approach only corrupts the team. Nevertheless, Chelsea proceeded on its way towards the goal set by Abramovich.
In 2008 Chelsea was one step away from winning the Championship. The final took place in Moscow, where the team was granted additional fan support, as Russian football lovers deem this team to be a little bit ‘their own’. However, Chelsea and Manchester United played to a draw back then. During the penalty shootout, Chelsea’s captain slipped on the wet pitch and Abramovich’s millions seemed to be wasted. He had to wait another 4years to fulfil his dream.
However, Abramovich’s team took its revenge on Manchester United sooner. But this time Chelsea’s chances of becoming champions were ruined by the incompetent refereeing of Tom Henning Øvrebø. Chelsea’s fans were outraged, and British police were even concerned about the personal safety of the referee.
Years have passed, the head coaches of the team have changed, but the desired trophy always slipped away.
This year the long-awaited victory was achieved under the young talented coach from Portugal, Andre Villas-Boas, but he couldn’t get along with the team’s veterans. This conflict resulted in a failure in the English Championship and an unconvincing performance in the first stage of the Champions’ League. The Portuguese coach was fired, and after that a whole series of football ‘miracles’ led the team to the victory over Bayern. It seems that Fortune gave Chelsea back all it took from it during all these years. So the fans of the German club can hope that one day in the future Fortune will also make up for this disappointing failure.
