Valery Gazzaev, the former head coach of the Dynamo Kiev, explained
why his leadership of the Ukrainian team was not successful in an
interview to the TV program “About Football”.
"First of all, I had the idea of building a real Ukrainian team, with Ukrainian trainers. And
really, for the last two years there were a lot of young players. For
example, the same Yarmolenko, Hacheridi, Garmash, Koval, plus the
experienced players - Shevchenko, Milevsky, Gusev and Michalik. They
were supposed to become a real backbone of the team, together with the
legionnaires. What went wrong? First and foremost, the fact that last
year we did not become champions. The team was playing a good level of
football. Not only in the national championship but also in the
Champions League matches. It is my fault that we did not become
champions. We had a good break, but in the end we got only second
place. We did not get into the Champions League. For us it was a
painful blow, because after two matches against Ajax we deserved much
more. Nevertheless, we got into the Europa League. Then a
psychological barrier was hit. With regard to the Ukrainian
championship, in general, before the match against Shakhtar, the team
was among the leaders, showing a normal game. First of all, patience
was necessary. The psychosis the team had complicated the whole
situation further, especially in the public understanding. So after we
played the last game with the “Sheriff”, I asked the president to
release me from my post. In general, I have a very good impression
about the city and about the people. And once again I want to address
the president, with whom I’ve been working, with very warm words and
to wish him only good luck."
For his part, Igor Surkis, the president of Dynamo, in an interview to
the newspaper “Soviet Sport”, explained why the resignation of Valery
Gazzaev became inevitable. “Valery once again expressed his desire to
leave Dynamo. We discussed the situation with him and made this
decision in the light of the team’s interests. Maybe this decision was
late, maybe not. But Gazzaev’s mood showed that it was unlikely the
situation would improve. So it is the right decision. I'm very
disappointed. I believed in Gazzaev and still consider him a strong
professional. Something just did not work out for him in this team. I
blame myself too. But on the other hand, the coaching staff had
everything it needed.” What did not work for Gazzaev in Dynamo?
Perhaps he’ll answer this question later.
