Just recently a scientific expedition was completed to the highland lake of Kazenoy-Am, one of the mysteries of the Caucasus. The
expedition was organized in cooperation with the Russian Professional Diving Association and the Diving Association of Tatarstan. It was the
first time that scuba divers had reached the depths of the lake. In fact, it was the first full-scale scientific investigation of the lake
at all. Previously even its precise depth was unknown.
The people of Chechnya call the lake 'the gem of the Caucasus' for its extraordinary beauty. Kazenoy-Am is rich in natural resources, such as
fish, for example Salmo ezenami, although the fauna in general is poor, which is characteristic of highland lakes .
The expedition determined that the average depth of the lake is 70 meters. Algae live even as deep as 9 meters, providing the water with
extra oxygen during the warm time of the year, while in winter the lake is covered with ice. The water of the lake isn't mineral and is
extremely pure, without traces of pollution.
This new research allows the Federal government to attribute the status of protected territory to the lake and its environs.
The head of the Chechen department of the Russian Geographic Society suggested that it is possible to create a federation of Chechen diving
lovers, who would help research the lake. The managers of the expedition also plan to issue a documentary film about the lake and the terrain surrounding it. All these activities could help attract tourists to Chechnya. The Russian Geographical Society expressed its rediness to help with tourism development of the republic.
