American Jewish Committee: Azerbaijan is of great global importance

The Executive Director of the American Jewish Committee David Harris shared his impressions of his visit to Azerbaijan. He recorded the corresponding video at the Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku, it was published on Harris' Twitter page.

Harris noted that he had been to Azerbaijan more than once. In his opinion, the country is amazing in many ways. Azerbaijan, located in the South Caucasus, on the shores of the Caspian Sea, on the border with Russia, Iran, Georgia and Armenia, is of great importance for the whole world, he said.

"Azerbaijan is of great regional and global importance for us. This is also important for the Jewish community of Azerbaijan. Despite the fact that Jews have lived in these territories for 2,500 years, they have never encountered anti-Semitism", the executive director of the American Jewish Committee emphasized.

According to Harris, he has been meeting with Azerbaijani Jews in different countries of the world for many years. "A common feature of each of them is attachment to Azerbaijan. In a country where the majority of the population is Shiite Muslims, they live together like a family in a friendly environment", he said.

"Azerbaijan is also important for Israel. We have diplomatic relations. Relations between the two countries are close in almost all areas. This country is of great importance in terms of strategic importance, geographical location, wealth in energy resources, relations with the United States, cooperation with Israel, religious tolerance and respect for the Jewish people," Harris concluded after his visit to Baku.

At this week's meeting between Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and a delegation headed by the Executive Director of the American Jewish Committee David Harris, the prospects for the development of relations between Azerbaijan and the United States, cooperation between the Azerbaijani government and the Jewish communities, as well as other issues of mutual interest were discussed.
