Armenia’s opposition resumed rallies across Yerevan’s central streets today. The demonstrators blocked the city’s Pushkin, Tumanyan and Parpetsi Streets chanting anti-government slogans.
"Armenia’s police control the situation in the republic. In order to avoid undesirable consequences, the law enforcement agents call to stop illegal gatherings and not to violate public order," TASS cited the police press service as saying.
Police voiced concern over "the participation of children in the illegal gatherings and demonstrations."
According to local media reports, mass protests have also started in Yerevan’s suburbs this morning. The situation is tense near the Ajapnyak District where the demonstrators try to block a road intersection.
Mass rallies kicked off in Yerevan and other Armenian cities on April 16. The opposition demands that Serzh Sargsyan, who was elected as the prime minister by the parliament after 10 years of presidency, should step down.
Armenia’s Prosecutor-General’s Office confirmed the detention of opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan and two other MPs over the illegal rallies.
